National Swimming League Final
Preston Swimming Club took on the best in the country as they competed in the National Swimming League ‘B’ Final at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield. The National Swimming League first held a national final in 1970 and this has since grown into the major team event in the UK swimming calendar. Clubs compete in seven regional leagues and the best move on to the national final, Preston took their place as they successfully emerged from the North West league.Preston Head Coach, Dave Fairhurst, said “It was an excellent result just to get to the finals given that we are competing against some of the larger squads. Having got there, the swimmers did the club proud, putting in some strong performances. The swimmers put in the hard work in training to achieve this success but we couldn’t do this without the help from all the coaches, the club sponsor, Forbes Solicitors, Preston City Council and the staff at both leisure centres.” Preston came away from the finals in an admirable 8th position. Shauntelle Austin took the award for the Most Improved Girl in her age group as she stormed home to first position in the 50m butterfly in a time 31.80, only 0.31 seconds off the event record. Austin was joined by Alicia Finch, Eleanor Laurence and Mollie McManamon in the medley relay to take first again as they squeezed out Camden Swiss Cottage SC. 18 year old Steph Slater provided inspiration to the younger swimmers as Preston’s girls captain put in an excellent 100m breaststroke in the Women’s Open event, taking top position in a time of 1.12.71. Slater also went on to get fourth in the 200m individual medley. In the Men’s Open, Ryan Bennett took a second and third position in the 100m butterfly and 100m back. Also in fantastic form was 13 year old Georgia Barton. Barton took first position in the 100m fly in a time of 1.08.11 and came second in the 100m free. Barton swam the 100m fly again, this time in the older, 15 years and under, event and took fourth improving her time to get 1.07.95.
