Synchro Gold
Preston Swimming Club pair Shauntelle Austin and Eleanor Laurence both struck gold at the Lancashire Age Group Synchronised Swimming Competition. Not only was this a fantastic success for Austin and Laurence it was a great first for Preston’s West View Leisure Centre, as this was the first time the competition had been held at the pool.Synchronised swimming is a fast growing sport in the UK and is now accepted internationally as a spectator sport, being one of the first events to sell out at the Beijing Olympics. To compete, synchronised swimmers must be strong, yet graceful, and have stamina. The sport is based upon the performance of ‘figures’ – set body positions and transition movements which are marked by a panel of judges. In the Lancashire Age Group competition, swimmers from across the county, Merseyside and Greater Manchester competed. In the novice category, Laurence executed three figures showing a sound grasp of the basic principles of synchronised swimming to the panel of judges. This performance provided her with a well-deserved first place. A second gold came from Austin, in the 12-year-and-under solo section. She began with a confident, elegant walk on and deck work followed by a powerful dive. The technically challenging routine was choreographed by her solo coach Alex Todd and was set to the soundtrack from Disney’s Peter Pan. |
