North Lancs League | Solid Start at Fleetwood

Laurence Seals Success


12 year old Seals 2009Preston Seals started the seasons Micro League campaign with a tightly fought home gala at West View Leisure Centre.

The Seals swam well but were ultimately squeezed into third position by Colne and Newton Hall.

The 9 year old girls team was made up of Hannah Callon, Amelia Carter, Imogen Carr, Hannah Wilding and Emily Armstrong. Wilding made an impressive Micro League debut with a first position in the 25m breaststroke. The boys’ team were Sam Gelder, Kieran Anderson, Ross Kitcher, William Howard and Jack Dunn.

In the 10 year old age group, boys, Matthew Monks, Matthew Newby, Sam Hollingworth, Owen John-Haslem, Joseph Duerden and Sohan Rathod powered home in first position in both relays, the freestyle in a Seals record time. Newby also came first in the breast, also in a club record time, and Monks took first in the back. The girls team of Prisha Patel, Hannah Murphy, Megan Eastwood, Ruth Buckley, Katie Wilkinson and Georgina Britton came second in both relays with Murphy coming first in the butterfly in a personal best (PB) time and Patel taking second in the back.

Patrick Hill, Ethan Fielding, Alistair McLaughlan, Hugh Barnes, Joseph Cunningham-Connolly and Alex Joyce made a strong boys 11 year old outfit, taking top position in all events except the medley relay. Club records were smashed by Joyce and Hill in the 50m butterfly and freestyle respectively, Fielding recorded a PB in the back and Joyce completed the quartet of individual victories with a win in the breast. The girls team of Sheena Patel, Katie Morley, Charlotte Gornall, Georgia Elderfield and Claudia Keogh came second in both relays with second positions also coming from Patel in the back and butterfly, and Gornall in the breast.

The 12 year old girls team of Eleanor Laurence, Kiera Mulvaney, Hayley Graveson, Olivia Baron and Georgia Murphy were in splendid form to take first place in all but the freestyle relay. Club records tumbled in the medley relay, the individual butterfly and breaststroke where an in-form Laurence proved too strong for the field. Baron took first in the free with Graveson taking first in the back, both with impressive PB’s. The boys team comprised Joshua Watson, Joshua Rennie and John Carter.

Solid Start at Fleetwood


Preston Swimming Club started the 2009 North Lancashire League with a solid performance at Fleetwood.

The newly promoted team came second to a strong Southport team, with Leyland and hosts Fleetwood coming third and fourth respectively.

The 12 year girls team was in resounding form to take first position in both the medley and freestyle relay, the medley in a record time. In the individual events, Abbie Kitcher came first in the 50m free, also setting a club league record, Eleanor Laurence took first in the butterfly, Molly McManamon first in the backstroke and Alicia Finch came second in the breast.

The boys’ team of Harry Murphy, Lee Reeder, Dominic Walker and Bradley Wallbank took second position in both relays with Murphy also coming second in the 50m backstroke in a record time, Reeder was second in the breast.

The 14 and under girls team was made up of Charlotte Sinclair, Lydia Walker, Ashleigh Wareing and Sophie Laurence. The girls came second in both relays with Sinclair taking pole position in the individual backstroke.

Jack Smith, Matthew Greenslade, Joseph Brass and Taylor Scarborough were third in the freestyle relay and fourth in the medley. Greenslade powered home first in the 50m free in a personal best time and Smith took second in the breast, also in a PB.

In the girls open age group, Bethany Shaw, Laura Berry, Shannon McGinty and Decia Mortimer took a second and third in the relays with the girls come third in each of the individual events, Shaw getting a PB in the fly.

The boys’ team of Mark Tootill, Ian Parker, Dean Heaps, John Rainford and Justin Austin came first in the free relay and third in the medley. Austin also came first in the back and Rainford second in the breast both in personal best times.

The final event of the gala was the six length freestyle cannon in which the Preston team of Kitcher, Sinclair, Shaw, Reeder, Smith and Tootill recorded an impressive club record time of 1.23.10 to take first place.
