Shrimps Gala 2008
Preston Swimming Club held their annual Shrimps Gala at West View Leisure Centre. The gala lets the youngest swimmers in the club demonstrate their skills in freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke.Head of teaching at the club Julie Jackson said: "This is a really good experience for the youngsters, it's a fun gala but it gives them their first experience of swimming in front of an audience, which for some can be a little daunting. I was really pleased with all of them, they did fantastically well and enjoyed the day." The budding swimmers pulled out all the stops to impress watching mums and dads, with everyone who competed winning either a medal or a certificate. The presentations were made by club captains Daniel Sliwinski and Stephanie Slater, who both compete at the highest levels of the sport and are fantastic ambassadors for the club. Also on poolside duty was Preston's head coach Dave Fairhurst, who said: "These swimmers are the lifeblood of the club. If we don't have young swimmers coming through who are enjoying the sport then we can't produce top swimmers like Daniel and Stephanie." Preston Swimming Club holds its teaching classes at Fulwood Leisure Centre on Sundays. As swimmers make progress, training extends to all days of the week at both Fulwood and West View. Fairhurst said: "Thanks to the support of Fulwood and West View we have a good amount of pool time so that we can concentrate on bringing swimmers into the club and produce high quality athletes."Photo: Shrimps with Tom Miller, Stephanie Slater, Daniel Sliwinski, Carly Salisbury and Sylvester |
