Sharks in Micro-League Final
PRESTON Sharks were forced out into fourth place in this year’s Micro League final. The event, won by defending champions Southport, was staged at Salt Ayre, Lancaster and while Preston had beaten the other two finalists earlier in the season, they found the standard of competition had stepped up.Sharks manager Steve Heaps said: “We knew before this final we would be in a very tough meet and this proved to be the case. “To be fair, we did set numerous Sharks records, and two new Micro League records. But I have to say I thought we lacked our usual spark. We seemed to be a little flat and that had an impact on our overall performance. The swimmers, teachers and coaches have worked very hard, but I feel we just didn’t do ourselves justice. We will improve next season, I have no doubt about that, and I very much look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.” The best performing team on the day were the 11-year-old girls, with Eleanor Laurence, Shauntelle Austin, Abbie Kitcher, Molly McManamon and Alishia Finch in tremendous form. Kitcher, Austin, Laurence and McManamon took the freestyle relay record under the minute mark as they came first in a time of 59.46. Finch replaced Laurence in the medley relay as the girls took first again – this time in a new Micro League and club record of 1.08.19. Kitcher came first in the 50m backstroke and second in the freestyle, with Austin coming first in the butterfly. In the 11-year-old boys’ events, Harry Murphy, Joshua Watson, Matthew Rosbottom and 10-year-old Lee Reeder competed in the relays. Murphy came second in the backstroke and freestyle, both in personal bests. The nine-year-old girls’ team of Holly Mawdseley, Emily Makinson, Prisha Patel and Indah Higson all swam personal best times in the 4x25m freestyle relay, with Higson also setting a PB in the 25m backstroke. Sean McGinty, Sam Hollingworth, Matthew Newby and James Brown also achieved PBs in a boys’ relay, this time the medley. McGinty also came second in the 25m freestyle. Ten-year-olds Andrew Davison, Toby Seers, Lee Reeder and Patrick Hill recorded club records of 1.11.66 and 1.04.81 in the medley and freestyle relays. Reeder also came third, in a club record, in the 50m backstroke, and was second in the butterfly.
