Sharks in Micro-League Final

PSC 2009 Sharks Team

PRESTON Sharks beat off stiff competition to finish up as runners-up to last season’s national champions Southport in the North West Micro League Final held at Blackpool.

Sharks returned from their summer break in good form in the event at the Palatine Leisure Centre. And team manager Steve Heaps said: “The final was swam to a very high standard indeed. So to finish second to last seasons national champions after only just coming back from a five-week summer break is a fantastic achievement.
The swimmers performed exceptionally well, I was absolutely delighted with every team member. We struggled in last year’s final but this year was the total opposite – we competed very well and got a terrific outcome.
I would sincerely like to thank all the coaches and teachers who have worked extremely hard with the swimmers this season. Without their dedication and skills this result would not have been possible”.

The nine-year-old girls team consisted of Alisha Nelson, Hannah Callon, Alicia Wood and Elissa Gornall, and Nelson started the season with two personal best (PB) times to take second in the 25m freestyle and butterfly. And Gornall also came second in the backstroke, also with a PB.
The boys’ team was made up of George Robinson, Raees Patel, Connor Adams and Chris Wilson.

The 10-year-old boys were in excellent form, with James Brown, Brandon Kinder, Ben Riding and Sean McGinty second in the medley relay and setting a club record in the freestyle relay. Kinder smashed the 25m butterfly competition record as he came home first in a time of 15.21, and made it a double by winning the 50m breaststroke. And McGinty took second in the freestyle.
The girls team was Portia Riding, Indah Higson, Holly Mawdsley and Emily Makinson, and Mawdsley took second in the breaststroke.

Club records were set in both the 11-year-old boys relay events as Toby Seers, Bradley Wallbank, Andrew Davison and Dominic Walker came second in the freestyle and medley events. Walker took the club record as he cruised to victory in the 50m backstroke event, with Reeder second in both the freestyle and butterfly, while in- form 10-year-old Brandon Kinder swam up an age group and still came first in the breaststroke.
The girls team of Kathryn Greenslade, Sheena Patel, Danielle Buchanan and Ella Brown also put in strong performances. Brown came second in the backstroke and Greenslade came second in the butterfly and freestyle, the free in a PB time.

The 12-year-old girls team rewrote the record book with some amazing performances. Abbie Kitcher, Alishia Finch, Molly McManamon and Shauntelle Austin took the competition record in the medley relay, setting a new best time of 1.04.10. They also came second in the freestyle relay in a club record time, while Austin took two more competition records – in the 50m butterfly with a time of 31.55, smashing a record that had stood for 11 years, and in the 50m backstroke in a time of 33.29. And Kitcher took second in the 50m freestyle.
Harry Murphy and Matthew Rosbottom were joined by 11- year-olds Reeder and Seers for second in the medley relay. Murphy took second in the backstroke while Reeder and Seers, swimming up an age group, came second in the butterfly and breaststroke.

And at the end, Sharks had amassed 119.5 compared to Southport A’s 171.5 points, with Leyland A next on 100 and then Fleetwood on 97.
