Five club records were broken as Preston Sharks finished second in their first Micro League fixture of the season. Shauntelle Austin, Harry Murphy, Cameron Austin and debutant Lee Reeder all set new bests as Preston took on hosts Southport, who won the event, Blackburn and Carnforth.

But Cameron Austin was the stand-out performer, breaking two records and swimming a personal best as he won every race he was involved in except one, when he finished second.

His personal best came in the butterfly leg of the 12 and under 4x25m medley relay alongside Matthew Clarkson, Jack Smith and Matthew Greenslade, who also posted a new PB. Austin then broke club records when winning the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

Shauntelle Austin, Cameron’s sister, broke the club record for the 25m butterfly and also swam two other PBs. The first came in the 10 and under 4 x2 5m medley relay, swimming with Molly McManamon, Eleanor Laurence and Abbe Kitcher, who all also swam a PB. Austin’s other PB came in the cannon, an event which also brought new bests for Katie Mawdsley and Georgia Barton.

Reeder and Murphy broke club records in individual events – Reeder in the nine years 25m freestyle and Murphy in the 10 and under 50m backstroke. Kitcher and McManamon recorded further personal bests in the girls’ 10years 4x25m freestyle relay. The girls also enjoyed a number of individual victories with Kitcher, Laurence, Greenslade, Ella Brown, Charlotte Sinclair and Abbey Huartson all keeping the points ticking over. Francesca Wright, Ella Brown, Kathryn Greenslade and Sheena Patel impressed when making their debuts in the nine years relays.

For the boys, nine-year-old debutants Patrick Hill, Andrew Davison, Alex Joyce and Reeder score valuable points by finishing second in the 4x25m freestyle relay. Claude Kirton, Joe Brass and Matthew Rosbottom all recorded three new personal bests. Kirton's first was in the 11 and under 50m freestyle, and the other came in the freestyle and medley relays when he swam with Robert Lavelle, Sam McIlwaine and Brass. The latter two both swam personal bests in both relays too, with Brass swimming his third in the 11 and under 50m backstroke.

Rosbottom’s first personal best came in the 10years 4x25m medley relay swimming with, Harry Murphy, Marco Santalucia and Joshua Watson who all also swam PBs. His second came in the 25m butterfly and his other in the 4x25m freestyle medley relay, in which Watson also swim another best time.

Matthew Clarkson also claimed a new PB in the winning 12 and under 4x25m freestyle team along with Cameron Austin, Jack Smith and Matthew Greenslade.

Team Manager Steve Heaps said: “We had a lot of swimmers who were making their Sharks debuts and I thought they all handled the situation extremely well. “I would also like to thanks the team of coaches who have done a great job getting the swimmers ready for this season’s competition”.
