Seals Gala at Lancaster
DESPITE an improved performance, Preston Seals could only manage another
third place in their latest Micro League gala. But coach Julie Jackson was
satisfied with her team’s performance. She said: “We have improved our points
score from last month and the amount of personal bests recorded have shown we
are moving in the right direction”. The gala began well for the Seals, with
the girls' and boys' 12 and under medley relay teams performing well and
recording six personal bests between them. The girls team comprised Aimee
Gallagher, Lena Tunbridge, Shannon McGinty and Nicole Graveson, and the latter
three all recorded new best times as they finished second. The boys team then
won their race, with Liam Marrows getting them underway before Joe Wright,
Freddie Carter and Ryan Pratt brought the team home in personal best
times. The gala continued in much the same fashion, with the girls posting a
further 17 personal bests. Gallagher set a new PB in the 12 and under freestyle
race, as did McGinty in the 12 and under 50m butterfly, Tunbridge in the 12 and
under breaststroke and Hayley Graveson in the 10 years 50m backstroke. Rachel
Davis swam three personal bests. The first came in the nine years freestyle
relay when competing with Charlotte Gornall, Lucy Worswick (who also achieved a
PB) and Bethany McBride. Davis’ second PB came in the nine years 25m
butterfly and the third came in the nine years medley relay, which saw the same
team except Charlotte Flynn, who swam a PB, replacing Lucy Worswick for the
freestyle leg. Sarah Buckley and Beth Hargreaves posted two PBs each. Buckley
swam her first in the girls 11 and under Freestyle relay, alongside Hargreaves,
Emma Keany, who also swam a personal best and Gemma Rennie. She then swam
another in the 11 and under 50m freestyle. Hargreaves set her first best when
winning the 11 and under 50m butterfly, and then in the butterfly leg of the
girls 11 and under medley relay, swimming with Rennie, Buckley and Chloe Brown,
who also set a new personal best for her freestyle leg, for a second-placed
finish. There were also other personal bests for Olivia Baron, when winning
the girls 10 years medley relay with Hayley Graveson, Keara Mulvaney-Slater and
Ella Huskisson, who posted a PB in the freestyle leg. Hannah McGill also swam a
new personal best to win the girls 10 years 50m breaststroke. It was not just
the girls who broke records as the boys also posted a number of personal best
performances. Freddie Carter added to his personal best in the earlier relay
with two more, one in the 12 and under 50m butterfly and the other in the final
relay of the night, the cannon, alongside Toby Seers, Ben Conlan and Bill
Cooper. Seers’ PB earned a second place in the boys 25m freestyle and Conlan
recorded a new personal best time in the 11 and under freestyle. Joseph
Cunningham-Connolly also swam two personal best times – the first coming
alongside Alex Brandwood, who also swam a PB, Ethan Fielding and Toby Seers in
the 9 year 4x1 Freestyle relay, and then the other in nine years medley relay
when Oliver Lucas (who also swam a PB) replaced Brandwood. The boys also
managed a second place in their 11 and under freestyle relay with a team
comprising James Shuttleworth who posted a personal best time, Ben Conlan, Harry
Holden and Jake Beatty. Holden also managed another PB in the boys 11 and under
50m butterfly. Nigel Standing and Bill Cooper swam PBs in the boys 10 years
freestyle relay along with Joshua Rennie and Ethan Fielding. Matthew Baron’s PB
helped his team-mates, Freddie Carter, Joe Wright and Ryan Pratt to win the boys
12 and under 4x1 freestyle relay.
