British Schools’ Modern Biathlon
Preston Swimming Club saw 5 of its athlete’s qualify for the British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships Final held at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
Ellen Buckley, Laura Joyce, Charlotte Sinclair, Jack Smith, Dominic Walker and Lydia Walker put in great performances earlier in the year to grab a place in the National Finals.
Biathlon, which consists of a 50m swim and 500m run for years 6 to 7 and a 100m swim and 1000m run for years 8 to 12/13, is one of the traditional ways that young people can take part in a multi-sport event, before deciding whether to progress to a full modern pentathlon - fencing, swimming, show jumping and a combined run / shoot.
It was a fantastic achievement by the Preston Swimmers as the event is becoming increasingly popular with some 4,500 young people from across the country competing in the 12 regional qualifying events.
Undaunted by the tough competition, Jack Smith, a Year 9 pupil at Bishop Rawstorne School, Croston, pushed himself to record personal best times in both the run and swim and in so doing took an impressive 4th position overall.
Year 10 girl, Charlotte Sinclair (Stanley High School, Southport) also recorded personal best times in both disciplines as she finished fifth nationally.
A trio of top six positions was secured as year 7 student Dominic Walker (Bolton School) took 6th place.
In the Year 11 /12 competition, Ellen Buckley of Cardinal Newman College came 19th and Laura Joyce, a year 9 pupil at All Hallows Catholic High School, Penwortham
came 35th. Despite making the finals Lydia Walker was unable to compete.
The Schools’ Biathlon Championships are organized by Pentathlon GB, the national governing body for modern pentathlon, and provide an opportunity for young people to participate in a multi-sport competition in an enjoyable, safe and competitive environment.
