North West Region Youth Championships

North Lancs Bagcats winners 2008

JOANNE Cutler and Dean Heaps were among the medals at the North West Region Youth Championships. The duo were among four Preston Swimming Club members representing Lancashire at the new 50-metre pool at Liverpool Aquatic Centre.

Cutler, 14, was competing in the girls’ 14/15 years category and gained two bronze medals in the 50m freestyle and butterfly. She also made finals in the 100m freestyle (4th), 400m freestyle (7th) and 100m butterfly (6th), and was 11th overall in the 200m freestyle.

In the same category, Bethany Shaw, 14, had six swims, with her best effort being in the 50m backstroke when she reached the final and a eighth-place finish. She also achieved 12th place in the 100m and 400m freestyle, 17th in the 100m backstroke, 20th in the 200m freestyle and 23rd in the 200m individual medley.

Heaps, 15, only entered his preferred breaststroke in the 15/16 boys category, and made the final in all three of his events. He was fifth in the 100m, sixth in the 50m and won a silver medal in his favoured 200m event, just missing his national qualifying time by 0.4 seconds.

In the same age group, John Rainford, 15, made finals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, coming eighth and sixth respectively. He also finished 10th in the 50m breaststroke, 31st in the 100m freestyle; 23rd in the 200m freestyle and 24th in the 50m freestyle.

Preston head coach Dave Fairhurst said “It’s very pleasing to have swimmers who train at Preston competing at this level. “All four of them performed well against the region’s best. “It was also good to compete in Liverpool’s new pool, which is just the type of facility Preston really needs.”
