North West Region Age Group ChampionshipsTHERE was another golden day for Preston Swimming Club when their top youngsters took part in the North West Region Age Group Championships.![]() The best youngsters from across Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire and the North Midlands competed at Manchester Aquatics Centre. And the Preston youngsters picked up 15 golds among a 34-strong medal haul. In addition, Shauntelle Austin and Georgia Barton came away with overall first place in the points competition, while Cameron Austin came second.Head coach Dave Fairhurst said: “I’m really pleased. The fact the medal tally beats last year’s achievements shows our continuous improvement and ability to compete at the highest level. The swimmers have been working hard in preparation for the regionals and it’s great to see this hard work producing results.” Shauntelle Austin, 11, dominated her age group and came away with a staggering medal haul of six golds, three silvers and a bronze, demonstrating all round ability by taking medals in every stroke. The golds came in the 100m and 200m butterfly, the 400m freestyle, 200m backstroke, and 200m and 400m individual medley – in a time of 5.28.08, 14 seconds clear of her nearest rival. Barton, 13, was in typically impressive form coming away with two gold medals, four silver and a bronze. She stormed to gold in the 100m freestyle, and took a second gold in the 200m butterfly. Cameron Austin, 13, also took medals in every stroke, coming away with a gold in the 200m butterfly plus a silver in the 400m individual medley and a further four bronze medals. Breaststroker Oliver Walker, 14, was outstanding as he took two gold medals in 100m and 200m events, the 200m in 2.39.13. and his breaststroke prowess proved inspiration to younger team-mate Brandon Kinder, 10. He also powered home in the 100m and 200m events, winning the latter four seconds ahead of his nearest rival. Kinder also came fourth in the 400m individual medley. Freestyle supremo Katie Mawdsley, 12, struck gold in the gruelling 800m and 1500m events, as well as taking silver in the 200m and 400m and coming sixth in the 100m. Lee Reeder, 11, took bronze medals in the 100m and 200m butterfly and came fifth in the 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley. Top-six positions were also recorded by Andrew Davidson, 10, in the 400m individual medley, Dominic Walker, 11, in the 200m backstroke, Jack Smith, 13, in the 800m and 1500m freestyle and Lydia Walker in the 200m breaststroke. |
