North Lancashire Age Groups
and Championships 2010

North Lancashire Medal Winners The Palatine Leisure Centre, Blackpool was the venue for the annual North Lancashire Swimming Association Age Groups and Championships 2010. The event sees the cream of Lancashire’s swimmers compete for the honour of being the best in the County.

Preston Swimming Club took a strong contingent of swimmers and came away with an amazing 66 gold medals, 48 silver medals and 55 bronze medals plus the City’s athletes recorded an impressive 71% personal best rate. The team performance saw Preston cement their position as the County’s top club as they came away with the prestigious Bob Marshall Trophy.

Head Coach, Steve Heaps, said “This was a great performance by everyone. The medal count is excellent and to keep hold of the Bob Marshall trophy is very pleasing. I have to say the standard of swims and the personal best rate was a great testament to the work that these athletes have put in from the start of the season – we now need to build on this as the season progresses. The performance this club puts in is also a great testament to the hard work and dedication of the teachers and coaches”.

10 year old Brandon Kinder was immense with six gold medals in the 50m fly, 50m and 200m back, 50m free, 50m breast and 200m IM, as well as coming overall top boy swimmer in his age group. Also in the 10 year age group, Portia Riding saw gold in the 100m fly.

Dominic Walker was dominant in the 11 year age group, again taking six gold medals and coming overall top. Walker’s gold’s came in the 200m IM, 50m and 200m back, 200m free, 200m breast and the combined 11 / 12 years 800m free. Preston showed strength in the age group with Lee Reeder also taking gold in the 50m and 200m fly and Bradley Wallbank getting gold in the gruelling 1500m free.

12 year Shauntelle Austin took seven gold medals despite being too fast in many events in the age group categories. Instead Austin had to dive in alongside the older swimmers in the Open category and the older competitors wished she hadn’t as Austin recorded gold in the 200m back, 400m free and 200m fly, as well as coming top in the 12 years 800m free, 100m and 200m breast, and the 100m free.

The 12 year old boys also had their star. Harry Murphy took overall top place as he cruised to gold in the 100m and 200m free, the 100m and 200m back plus the 200m fly.

13 year old Katie Mawdsley took the freestyle gold medals effortlessly as she powered home in the 100m, 200m and 400m events. Breaststroker, Abby Huarston took top spot in the 100m breast.

Florie McLeish swam to six gold medals in the 14 year age group proving too much for the competition in the 200m IM, 400m and 800m free, 100m and 200m fly and the 200m breast. Cameron Austin came overall first in the boys age group with top positions in the 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m free and the 100m and 200m back. The age group medal tally was further added to by Jack Smith as he took gold in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.

14 year old Georgia Barton, another swimmer too fast for her age group events, had to take on the older swimmers in the Open events. Notwithstanding the age gap Barton took impressive golds in the 100m fly, 400m IM and the 200m freestyle.

Further Open gold medals came from Mark Tootill in the 100m back, John Rainford in the 200m breast, Jack Holden in the 200m fly and Laura Berry in the 800m free.
