National Junior Disability Championships
Preston Swimming Club athlete and Hutton High School pupil, Jack Bridge, struck gold – four times – at the National Junior Disability Swimming Championships, organized by the Disability Sport Events (DSE), and supported by Nationwide Building Society.
The event, renowned as a springboard to international success, was held at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre and saw over two hundred swimmers compete for national titles.
The 15 year old Preston athlete demonstrated his abilities in all strokes as he took 3 gold medals in the individual events – 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and 100m individual medley, 3 silver medals – 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle and 2 bronze medals – 50m backstroke and 100m butterfly, as well as coming fourth in both the 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
Bridge also showed tremendous team spirit to save a personal best performance for the 400m freestyle relay (59.96sec) to help the Northwest Regional Team to take a silver medal. The Northwest team went one better in the 400m medley relay where they took gold, Bridge providing the backstroke leg.
Preston Swimming Club Head Coach, Steve Heaps, said "Jack had an exceptionally good National Junior Disability Championships. His fitness, stroke and skill development continue to improve and this is down to his dedication in training. As a result of the hard work, performances in the competition pool continue to improve. Jack swam his first ever sub 60 seconds 100m frontcrawl in the North West Relay team and again this has been achieved through hard work and dedication. These results should now encourage Jack and give him the confidence to continue the hard work towards the British Championships at the end of March. All at the Club wish him well".
