Lancashire Championships
Despite many sterling performances from Preston Swimming Club members in the Lancashire Championships, it was the Austin family who took the competition by storm.
Shauntelle Austin, nine, and brothers Cameron, 11, and Justin, 14, made history when they all won Bagcat awards, the prize given to the overall top swimmer in each age group.
Between them they managed 32 top-10 finishes.
It was Justin who led the way with 15 of those top-10 finishes in his age group.
These included first places in the 200m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly, seconds in the 200m backstroke and 800m freestyle, and third places in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley.
Cameron picked up nine top-10 finishes against his peers, including first places in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke.
Shauntelle managed eight top-10 finishes, including wins in the 50m backstroke, 200m individual medley, 50m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 200m butterfly.
Among the other Preston swimmers to star was Florie McLeish who recorded 11 top-10 finishes. They included victory in the 11 years 200m individual medley and seconds in the 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly.
Other winners included Bethany Kington, who won the 16 years 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley, and also managed third places in the 200m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.
Joanne Cutler picked up an impressive seven top-10 finishes including victory in the 12 years 50m butterfly and a second in the 100m butterfly.
Jareth Geoghegan’s seven top-10 finishes included victory in 15years 200 backstroke, second places in the100m backstroke and 200m individual medley, and a third in the 100m breaststroke.
There were also wins for Daniel Sliwinski in the 16 years 200m backstroke and 200m breaststroke, Abbey Hargreaves in the 14 years 50m butterfly and Andrew Addison in the open 100m butterfly.
Lois Newton managed seven top-10 finishes, including victory in the 14 years 1500m freestyle, and a third place in the 400m individual medley.
In the 1500m freestyle, Luke Pool, 12, and Joseph Barnish, 14, both finished second in their age groups.
Jack Bridge was second in the 12 years 800m freestyle, while James Radcliffe was third in the men’s open 800m freestyle.
Other medals went to Jenna Huartson who was third in the 15 years 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke, Rachel Armistead for second in the 16 years 100m and 200m freestyle, Matthew Clarkson third in the 12 years 100m and 50m backstroke, Rebecca Hall third place in the 14 years 100m, John Rainford third in the 14 years 100m breaststroke, Harry Murphy second in the nine years 50m backstroke, and Abbey Huartson second in the 10 years 200m breaststroke.
- Others to perform well but unable to break into the top three were:
- Lisa Gorton, six top-10 finishes, including sixth in 14 years 400m freestyle.
- Jack Smith, eight top-10 finishes including fourth in 11years 50m freestyle and fifth in 50m breaststroke.
- Luke Pool, fifth in 12 years 100m freestyle
- Joe Barnish, eighth in 14 years 100m freestyle
- James Radcliffe, eighth in open 100m butterfly
- Georgia Barton, seventh in 11 years 100m freestyle.
- Kathryn Greenslade, ninth in nine years 50m breaststroke
- Hayley Smith, fifth in 14 years 200m breaststroke
- Ellen Buckley, seventh in 14 years 400m individual medley
- Lauren McGinty, fifth in 15 years 400m individual medley
- Abbe Fielding, 10th in 13 years 200m individual medley
Additional information from the Lancashire Championships:
Eleanor Laurence in the 9 year old girls 200 metres breaststroke stepped up to the podium to receive a silver medal, Eleanor also came 4th in the 50 metres breaststroke, 4th in the 50 metres butterfly and 7th in the 100 metres freestyle.
Dean Heaps won silver in the Boys 14 year old 200 breaststroke and came 4th in the 100 breaststroke. After all his events Dean came 5th overall in the boys 14 year old age group.
Bethany Shaw, 13, qualified in the 100 freestyle final and after all her events came 5th overall in the 13 year old girls age group.
Shannon McGinty, 12 year old girls, swam the 100, 200, 400 and 800 metre freestyle events achieving personal best times.
Jack Holden, 13 year old boys, obtained personal best times in his 800 and 400 metre freestyle events. Mitiku Turnbull obtained personal best times in most of his events. Both Jack and Mitiku were successful in qualifying for the Regional Championships in June.
Sophie Laurence, 11 year old girls, swam personal best times in her 100 and 200 freestyle events. Also qualifying and competing at the Lancashire Championships were 13 year old team mates Jessica Jackson, Eilidh McLeish and Frances Haggerty, all the girls swam well achieving personal best times in many of their events.
