Holden at Biathle World Championships
PRESTON schoolboy Jack Holden put up a brave performance when he competed in the Biathle World Championships in the picturesque principality of Monaco on the French Riviera.
Holden, 15, (pictured) is a Year 11 pupil at Archbishop Temple School and a member of Preston Swimming Club.
He earned his place by qualifying through the British Championships and joined over 330 athletes from across the world competing in age group categories ranging from the 10 years and under to the oldest age group the Masters aged over 60.
This quickly-growing sport comprises the two most practised sports in the world running and swimming.
Holden was competing at the younger end of the combined 15/16 year age group and finished 14th.
He started confidently with a strong display in the 1,000m run, which was immediately followed by a 200m swim not in the calm waters of West View Leisure Centre but the sea off Larvotto Beach and then another 1,000m run.
Holden said: This was a great experience. Being new to open water swimming I was a little nervous at first, but it all came together in the end and I was very pleased to come 14th.
The Great Britain team returned home top of the medal table with nine gold, three silver and 11 bronze medals.
