Note from the Chairman

To all members, this is the first of what I hope will be a quarterly newsletter updating members on changes and issues of importance in relation to the Club.

     1) Increase in membership fees

You will note from the attached correspondence that the membership fees have increased by varying amounts dependent on which category your child is in. Preston Swimming Club (PSC) does not have any control over the membership fees and does not receive any of the money. All membership fees go to both the Amateur Swimming Association and Swim Northwest. You need to be a member to be part of PSC so unfortunately you have to pay them.

     2) Increase in club fees

Unfortunately due to increased costs involving pool hire, coaches/teachers swimming qualifications and general costs of running the club it, has been necessary to increase fees. The increases are relatively small and still mean that swimmers are receiving very good coaching and teaching at very favourable costs in comparison with both private clubs and public swimming clubs, we are still the cheapest. The club made an operating loss last year of £3,000 and it would have been more but for sponsorship and assistance from Preston City Council, the increase in fees will go a long way to balance the budget. Please see the website for the latest fees and alter your standing order as appropriate.
Members’ apathy in relation to fund raising events has not helped this year and I hope that this will improve during 2009.

     3) Club Championship

I understand that there was some adverse feedback at the Club Championships in relation to the cost of entry and purchase of the programme.
The club has to be self financing as explained at point 2 above. The cost of running the championship is in excess of £3,000 when printing the programme, medals and ancillary costs are taken into account and it has to be paid for. The cost of entry and the programme are set to cover the costs and are some if not the cheapest fees for entry to a gala you will find. We are not a profit making organisation but we must balance the budget.

     4) PSC Website

The club website is now well established and is one of the best in the area. The site is updated continually with all club news, galas, information and is linked to several interesting sites. Our sponsors have links to the site including Forbes Solicitors, Ambulant Physiotherapy and Creative UPVC, who all offer reduced costs or immediate attention, please consider supporting our sponsors.

     5) Parental participation

We are one of the biggest clubs in the country and need a steady stream of volunteers to help run the club. We have a committee of 16 volunteers and coaches/teachers in the high 20’s. We always need to increase our number of coaches/teachers and helpers. If you want to become involved in either the swimming or administrative side of the club, please do not hesitate to approach a member of the committee or one of the coaches.
Finally, on behalf of Preston Swimming Club Committee and the coaches/teachers, I would like to thank all of you who have supported the Club during 2008 and I hope you all have a great 2009.

Peter Mason

Chairman
