Club Championships
Some magnificent performances graced Preston Swimming Club’s 120th annual championships, with 31 club records falling.Event organiser Paul Todd said: “I take great pleasure in the thought that athletes like A E Dalzell, Championship Cup winner in 1888 and Marguerite Moss, the Wade Trophy winner from 1931 to 1946, would approve of the club we enjoy today.”In the youngest age group for eight-year-olds, Jessica Hargreaves reigned supreme by taking golds in all four strokes. Bethany Fletcher came second, claiming silver medals in the butterfly and freestyle, and a bronze in the backstroke. Emily Lawrence and Rebecca Nuttall tied for third place.Magnificent Raees Patel topped the boys’ events with golds in the butterfly and backstroke, and silver in breaststroke and freestyle. Chris Wilson and Connor Adams came joint second. Wilson took gold in the breaststroke and freestyle, and silver in the backstroke, while Adams got silver in the butterfly and bronze medals in the backstroke, freestyle and breaststroke. For the nine-year-olds, Holly Mawdsley was magnificent, taking gold in all four strokes as well as the 100m individual medley and 200m freestyle. Indah Higson came second with silver in all events. Prisha Patel was third. James Brown came first for the boys, with gold medals in the 100m individual medley, 200m freestyle and the 50m butterfly and backstroke. Ben Riding came second overall, picking up two silver and four bronze medals, while Sean McGinty came third with a gold and three silver medals. Kathryn Greenslade took maximum points in the 10-year-old age group. She took gold medals in all strokes including the 100m individual medley and 200m freestyle. Ella Brown came second with five silver medals and a bronze, and Sheena Patel was third. Not only did Lee Reeder take maximum points for the boys, he also set four new club records in the 100 individual medley, 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle. Toby Seers pipped Dominic Walker to second position by a single point. Seers won silvers and five bronzes, while Walker took four silvers and a bronze. Shauntelle Austin and Abbie Kitcher could not be separated in the 11-year-old category, sharing the honours evenly. Austin took gold in the 100 individual medley, 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke, with Kitcher taking gold in the 200m and 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke – both girls took silver in the events they did not win gold. Austin set club records in the individual medley, butterfly and backstroke and Kitcher broke the record in the 200m freestyle. Third spot was tied by Alishia Finch and Eleanor Laurence. Matthew Rosbottom beat Harry Murphy to first place for the boys. Rosbottom took gold in 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke, with Murphy winning gold in 100m individual medley, freestyle and breaststroke and butterfly. In the 12-year-old age group, powerful Katie Mawdsley stormed to pole position with gold medals in the 200m individual medley, 200m and 50m freestyle, 200m and 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly. Mawdsley broke club records in the individual medley, 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke. Breaststroke specialist Abby Huartson took second position with a gold in the 50m and 200m events – the 200m a club record. Tayler Scarborough led the way in the boys age group with gold in the 200m individual medley, backstroke, freestyle and 50m backstroke, silver in the 50m butterfly and freestyle. Joe Brass came second and Sam McIlwaine third. Georgia Barton smashed five club records while winning the 13-year-old girls’ event. She won gold and set the record in all except the breaststroke – in the 200 individual medley, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Charlotte Sinclair came second overall with silver medals in the 200m individual medley, 100m freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, and the 200m freestyle. Aimee Gallagher came third overall, and Jessica Chadwick came fourth and set a club record in the 200m breaststroke. Cameron Austin won the boys’ event, taking four gold medals and breaking the club record in each – the 200m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly. But Oliver Walker was not far behind with gold medals and club records in the 100m freestyle and the 100m and 200m breaststroke. Jack Smith took third spot. Joanne Cutler and Bethany Shaw were neck and neck in the 14-year-old girls and finished equal first. Cutler took gold in the 100m and 200m freestyle and 100m and 200m butterfly, with club records falling in both butterfly events. Shaw also took a club record in the 100m backstroke, along with gold medals in the 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. Jack Holden was first overall for the boys, with gold medals in the 200m individual medley and freestyle and 100m breaststroke. Luke Pool came second, setting a club record in the 100m freestyle and also winning gold in the 100m backstroke and butterfly. Jack Bridge was third. In the open events, Hayley Smith came out tops, with Jessica Jackson taking second and Ellen Buckley third. Smith won the 200m individual medley, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly, while club captain Stephanie Slater broke the club record in the 100m breaststroke. Club coach Michael Wilson, was first, with gold medals in the 100m and 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. Justin Austin set club records in the 100m backstroke and 200m butterfly, as well as winning gold in the 200m individual medley and 100m butterfly. |
