North of England Winter Biathlon Championships
Preston Swimming Club members proved they could win on dry land as well as in the water as they took three individual golds and a team first in the North of England Winter Biathlon Championships.The event comprises a run and swim with points awarded on the basis of the times recorded.It was held at the Preston Sports Arena and West View Leisure Centre and attracted more than 160 athletes from 16 clubs across the North West, Yorkshire and the North East.In the 11/12-year-old category, Laura Joyce took overall first place with an excellent display in the pool and on the track. Joyce also took top place in the team event with Shauntelle Austin (sixth overall) and Abbie Kitcher (11th). In the 11/12-year-old boys' event Ben Conlan was 16th. Florie McLeish took silver in the 13/14-year-old age group with third positions in the run and the swim. Aimee Gallagher came fifth overall. Jack Holden struck overall gold in the boys' event. He timed his run to perfection in a hotly-contested track event and was also first again in the pool. The boys also took second position in the team event where Holden was joined by Jack Smith (ninth overall) and Cameron Austin (10th). In the 15/16-year-old event, Ellen Buckley took first place in the run and was third overall to pip team-mate Eilidh McLeish who came in fourth. Justin Austin made it a triple gold for the club with an outstanding effort in the boys' event, after finishing second in the run and swim. Myles Kitcher |
