British Championships

Stephanie Slater and Daniel Sliwinski Congratulations to DANIEL SLIWINSKI and STEPHANIE SLATER for their recent achievements at the British Championships held at Manchester. Daniel, Mens’ Captain of Preston Swimming Club, was the Junior 18 and under 100 Breaststroke Champion and the Junior 18 and under Individual Medley Champion. Steph who is Ladies Captain of the Lancashire Squad and ranked Number 1 in England in the 50m Breaststroke was the British Junior 18 and under 100 metre Breaststroke Champion. Preston Swimming Club Chief Coach, Dave Fairhurst, expressed his pride in the swimmers who have been members of Preston Swimming Club from an early age and now train at Gallica with Rob Greenwood.
Preston has also been represented by some other swimmers who train at Gallica and Bolton Metro but who are 1st claim to Preston and they have come away with some phenomenal results.
RYAN BENNETT produced a fantastic performance winning the 100m Freestyle in a time of 51.70 in the 18yr/under category.
ANDREW ADDISON came 24th in the Open 50m Butterfly in a time of 26.30, JAMES RADCLIFFE produced a superb performance in the gruelling Open 1500m Freestyle, finishing in 20th place with a time of 16:23.82 and also finishing in 6th place in the 18yrs/under category in a time 0f 16:24.69. James followed this with a top ten finish in the 800m Freestyle coming 9th in 8:36.13 and 12 year old JOANNE CUTLER swam in her first British Championships in the Open 50m Freestyle and recorded a great time of 28.99 seconds.


First North Lancs League Gala

Preston Swimming Club were edged out by neighbours Chorley Marlins by just a point in their first North Lancashire League gala of the season. Disappointed Preston coach John McGinty said: “To lose like that is always difficult, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. We’ve posted a good score and hopefully that is a solid grounding to base our season on. I know we can improve and go on to win these type of galas.”
Stephanie Slater was in record-breaking mood, beating two club records when winning the open 50m butterfly and breaststroke. Slater also posted two personal bests in the league when a member of the victorious girls 4x50m open freestyle relay – which also included Beth Kington, Jenna Huartson and Lauren McGinty – and then in the same teams 4x50m medley relay.
Bethany Shaw posted three league personal best times in four swims in Under-14s races. She swam the freestyle leg when the club finished second 4x50m medley relay, with Abbe Fielding, Ashley Kirton and Jessica Jackson completing the team.
Shaw’s other bests came when winning the 50m butterfly and finishing third in the 6x25m freestyle cannon relay. She was also part of the winning 4x50m freestyle team, when Faye Birch replaced Kirton from the medley squad.
Most of Preston’s relay squads came first or second. The girls 12 and under relay teams made up of Charlotte Sinclair, Aimee Gallagher, Sophie Lawrence and Lena Tunbridge, who was replaced by Nicole Graveson in the medley, returned with two second places. Individually, Sinclair won the 12 and under 50m butterfly and was second in the 50m breaststroke, Lawrence was third in the 50m freestyle and Gallagher second in the 50m backstroke. For the the 14 and under girls, Fielding was second in the 50m backstroke, as was Kirton in the 50m breaststroke.
There were no club records for the boys, but there were several notable performances.
Sterling Austin and Michael Wilson both achieved three league personal best, while Joshua Heath won the 14 and under 50m breaststroke, Byron Hall the open 50m backstroke and Mitiku Turnbull the 14 and under 50m butterfly.
Wilson picked up his new best times alongside Austin, Byron Hall and Ben Parker in the open 4x50m freestyle and medley relays, and then in the open 50m breaststroke. Austin also achieved bests in those same relays and the open 50m butterfly.
The 14 and under relay team, made up of Jamie McLaughlan (replaced by Philip Mason in the freestyle), Joshua Heath, Mitiku Turnbull and Jack Bridge won both their relays.
The 12 and under freestyle relay team consisting of Liam Marrows, Freddie Carter, Matthew Baron and Jake Beatty (replaced by Joseph Wright in the medley) finished fourth and third respectfully.
Individually in the 12 and under events, Carter was second in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke, Marrows third in the 50m freestyle and Wright third in the 50m breaststroke.
In the boys 14 and under races, Mason was third in the 50m freestyle and McLaughlan second in the 50m backstroke.
