Preston Water Polo Triumph Over "Unbeatable" Lancaster City

Preston Water Polo players in action

Preston’s Senior Men’s Water Polo team achieved an historic victory over arch rivals Lancaster City in the North Lancashire League. Lancaster had previously beaten Preston in every game for over 10 years.

Preston had only played Blackpool two days earlier putting in a fantastic team performance in that game to win 9 – 6, with the most valued player award going to Thomas Miller who played out of his skin between the posts. This provided the curtain raiser to the big game with Lancaster.

Recently appointed Team Manager / Head Coach, Mark Molloy, said he had asked the team “to carry forward this new found confidence and to take the game to Lancaster”. This is exactly what they did, with the team playing with true passion they could have been four goals up in the first five minutes, even having a penalty saved.

Once the goals started to come Preston won every quarter and ultimately the game 8 - 5.

Molloy added “I always knew this team could do it, I just had to get them to believe it. I am so pleased for them. Since my return to the club in February, the players have been so committed and have trained so hard – they have been extremely dedicated”. Ben Bailey was crowned most valued player for the Lancaster game scoring three well taken goals and displaying excellent off the ball play.

Manager Molloy continued “We can still strengthen this team with a couple of young players and a senior waiting to break in to the team. We have some very tough games coming up but if the team plays as well as they did against Lancaster I can see a good season ahead of us. Very well done to all the team and good luck for the rest of the games to come”.
